For various road works in Nashik city, such as tarring, resurfacing, macadamization, etc, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has invited bids worth Rs 10.7 crore. The tenders include around 28 various road works in various parts of the city. The road contracts are to be done through private contractors and the last date for filing the bids is next October 3.

For the poor condition of roads in Hyderabad-Secunderabad twin cities, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has blamed the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB). Due to constant sewage overflows only about 80 per cent of the roads in the cities were battered, the Corporation alleged. Pipeline leakages and water stagnation were causing damages to the raods in the twin cities, it said.

Fed up with the travel on Hyderabad roads, experts have suggested the government to call in global experts and build one or two model roads in the city and follow such method of constructing long-lasting roads. In Coimbatore city, a newly constructed underground drainage chamber on Sathyamangalam Road has been caved-in forcing the traffic police to barricade the caved-in portion for safety and to keep off the traffic from plying on it. Complaints are pouring in that the contractor executing the project on behalf of the Coimbatore Corporation is at fault.

Karnataka government would take up several urban development works in Mangalore, Udupi, Puttur and Kundapur under the second phase of Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environmental Management Project (Kudcemp) at a cost of Rs 450 crore. The Project would be taken up with a loan from the Asian Development Bank, said the State Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake on August 12.

The Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India extended the period of JNNURM by 2 more years for completion of ongoing projects or reforms. It has further approved sanctioning of new projects upto March 31, 2014 as a transitional phase. JnNURM completed its normal tenure of 7 years on March 31, 2012
