Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan informed the state legislature that his cabinet would clear the metro project for Pune this month and send a report on the project to the union government for final approval by the end of this month.
Once the central government approves the project, the state government may sanction funds. It may be recalled that state government agreed to provide funds for the two metro rail corridors in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. The corridors include Vanaz to Ramwadi and Nigdi to Swargate.
In association with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations would carry out the project. Both corporations have made token provisions in their budgets while asserting that there will be no shortage of funds for the project.
The two corridors in the first phase cover a distance of 31.5 meter and its total estimated cost is Rs 10,183 crore.
Senior officials in the Pune civic body said that they have applied to the registrar of companies for formation of a special purpose vehicle which will implement the project.
The union government has already made a provision of Rs 10.01 crore in its union budget for 2013-14.
