The COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent social distancing norms might give a push to the large-scale digitalisation of train travel globally, Siemens has said.
“There will be a lot of push for digitalisation coming out of it where you can book your ticket seamlessly without touching anything. You will know exactly where you will be seated. The operator can manage that and crowding in a train. And when you get off the train, an app will tell you where to go. Either left or right to avoid crowds,” Michael Peter, CEO, of Siemens Mobility told presspersons in the webcast of a global press meet from Munich on Monday.
“We have always had the vision of a completely managed train where you have to really not worry about nothing when it comes to the connection. That is something that may come out stronger of this situation,” added Peter.
According to Peter and Sabrina Soussan, also CEO, Siemens Mobility, this opportunity for digitalisation could manifest itself in areas such as automated train services with enhanced frequency and contactless ticketing.
Siemens, which is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trains and other solutions for the railway industry, was also optimistic of commuters returning to rail transport as cities across the world ease lockdowns enforced to contain the pandemic. The company has already initiated use of technologies like robotics and ultraviolet-C radiation to disinfect trains.
Unveiling of New Vision and Motto
Siemens Mobility also unveiled its new vision and motto for a clear and common direction to lead the mobility industry into the future. This comes at a time when the industry is witnessing a growing demand for sustainable and intermodal mobility, driven by megatrends such as urbanisation and decarbonisation.
“We have reached a new milestone with a vision for our company: a vision to gather around, to strive for, to guide us day by day,” said Soussan. “This vision and motto provide us with a roadmap to develop innovative mobility solutions that will enable our customers around the world to make infrastructure intelligent, increase value sustainably, enhance passenger experience and guarantee availability.”
