The Airports Authority of India has demolished the old building as a part of the taxiway work. After the completion of the ongoing taxiway, Meenambakkam airport can handle more cargo as parking bays will be able to accommodate bigger B747-800 cargo planes. Previously, the three parking bays which were in front of the old airport building at the city airport near the integrated cargo terminal were not broad enough to park big planes, which then made unloading of goods difficult and eventually the airport ran in for a loss. Furthermore, AAI plans on pulling down an old cargo building which is occupied by Air India so that space can be used to build parking bays for cargo planes, once the taxiway work is completed in March next year.
