In a bid to become self-reliant in energy, the Ministry of Shipping has chalked out plans to install around 200 MW captive (150 MW solar and 50 MW wind) renewable power projects in as many as 11 major ports in India.
"In the first phase, 150 MW of solar power projects will be constructed in eight major ports," Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister, Ministry of Shipping and Ports told Infrastructure Today on the sidelines of Maritime India Summit 2016 curtain raiser.
According to Gadkari, the ministry, in its recommended to all the major Ports has suggested to utilize their warehousing facilities for installing solar (rooftop) projects.
However, when it comes to installation, the ministry is not clear whether projects to the tune of 150 MW to be distributed equally among these ports or it will be based on port's warehousing infrastructure (roof space).
In this concern, the major ports are yet to submit their plans to the ministry of Shipping and Ministry of power.
According to a ministry official, JNPT and Kandla Port has already submitted their plans but did not reveal detailed information. Whereas, Visakhapatnam Port has already installed 10 ME of solar power project in their premises.
