The vessel mv BBC Victoria sailed from Kochi with three load containers of commercial explosives for Indonesia. The Indian Explosives company sent the first container cargo recently.
With this, Kochi has become the first port in India to start export of commercial explosives in containers for mining purposes world-wide. Containerisation of the commercial explosives enhances the safety aspects of the shipment, sources said.
Hitherto, commercial explosives in break bulk form were being shipped only from Mumbai port, where the cargo was being loaded in vessels at the anchorage, about 10 nautical miles from the dock.
