The decision to appoint private consultants for improving aesthetics of roads in Pune was postponed by the the standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) recently. The civic administration had tabled a proposal before the standing committee seeking approval to appoint four private agencies on 'empanelment of urban designers'.
These agencies will conduct various surveys before actual road construction. These surveys include land use, traffic count, pedestrian count, activity, informal sector, street parking, landscape and others.
The agencies will then prepare final maps as per the PMC's street design manual and ensure that the road construction is as per the manual guidelines.
Charges of Rs 9 lakh per km will be paid to agencies for road work with a width of less than 30 mtr, while Rs 10 lakh will be paid for work on roads more than 30 mtr wide and Rs 60 per sq mtr for designing of chowks.
