Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) expects to earn revenues worth nearly Rs 5 crore a year initially through ship breaking operation, which it decided to resume after a gap of almost three years.
The port stopped ship breaking operation at its Kolkata Dock System (KDS) facility in 2010-11 owing to technical reasons. Before the operation was stopped, the port used to earn an average of almost Rs 67 crore a year from this.
The port reportedly allocated five to six berths at KDS for ship breaking operations and preliminary works took off with three mid-size vessels.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the port management plans to hire a self-propelled water barge and a pilot launch.
