Union Ministry of Shipping plans to promote shipping sector as part of its Maritime Agenda 2010-2020, which is a perspective plan of the ministry for the present decade.
The ministry plans to promote the shipping sector through increase in the tonnage, declaration of coastal shipping policy, establishment of a ‘Freight Exchange’, creation of ombudsman or tribunals for shipping matters, among others.
The ministry also plans to form an independent Marine Casualty Investigation Cell, set up a P&I Club in India, introduce passenger ferry services between India and nearby countries, Ro-Ro Ferry service in Gulf of Kutch, Gulf of Cambay and other suitable places.
Further, the ministry wants to grant infrastructure status to shipbuilding industry, give preference to Indian shipyards in procurement of ships by government through global tenders, expand Cochin Shipyard.
