The Larsen & Toubro’s container terminal project constructed at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore at Kattupalli, near Chennai, is to go on commercial stream from September. The project has been delayed nearly for two years. It is expected that the new terminal will take away major chunk of container traffic from the Chennai port.

Presently, Chennai Port has two terminals, one run by DP World and other one by PSA International.

Thailand Chennai Express Service (TCX a consortium of NYK & X-Feeders) is the first vessel to call the Port on September 19, 2013. The Port rotation of this service will be Laem chebang – Singapore – Port Klang – Kattupalli – Chennai – Port Klang-Singapore-Laem Chabang. Sources in the Port said that every seventh day a vessel will be calling the Port.

One of the major advantages of the terminal will be free movement of the containers. Due to congestions at Chennai port, export boxes takes around 1.5 to 3 days to reach the terminal, since Kattupalli is located outside the perimeter of the city, the traffic will come down drastically and it can save a day or two for the exporters, which will lead to price reduction.
