Responding to President Pranab Mukherjee’s suggestion to develop a new port near Kolkata, Belgium on October 3 assured the Indian government that it would look into the President’s suggestion. The two countries have discussed cooperation in new areas like port management.

During a delegation-level talks with Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo, Pranab Mukherji had asked if an arrangement could be worked out for helping the Kolkata Port Trust to develop port facilities at Sagar Island, located 80 nautical miles south of Kolkata.

Given Belgium’s expertise in managing riverine ports, the country has offered collaboration in ports. Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan asked Indian Ambassador Dinkar Khullar and PS Raghavan, Special Secretary in the External Affairs Ministry, to follow up the President’s suggestion to see if Belgian dredging companies could be roped in for project near Kolkata.
