Though mining in Goa has been banned, the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has successfully turned the adverse situation into its favour by attracting new cargo to the port. The port said that now it expects tremendous amount of cargo from neighbouring states into through the MPT.
MPT Chairman P Mara Pandiyan stated that new cargo like wood chips, granite, wheat, maize and sugar have boosted the export earnings of the port to a great extent. Also, the mechanisation of port operations with the induction of the mobile harbour crane has helped loading and evacuation.
Despite the initial challenges faced by the port because of the ban on mining, business at MPT looks very positive. Hence the port has released variable dearness allowances (VDA) to all its employees and pensioners as a New Year gift, eh added.
