He will also share India’s experience in expanding energy access and affordability—particularly across rural and underserved regions—and spotlight the challenges faced by developing nations in navigating climate and energy transitions amid resource and capacity constraints.
Union Minister for Power, Manohar Lal Khattar, will represent India at the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial Meeting (ETMM) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, from October 7-10. The high-level gathering, hosted under South Africa’s G20 Presidency, will convene energy leaders from the world’s major economies to shape the future of clean, secure, and equitable energy systems.
Khattar will participate in sessions on ‘Energy Security, Clean Cooking, Affordable and Reliable Access’, and ‘Sustainable Industrial Development’, with a focus on strengthening international cooperation to ensure universal access to sustainable energy, critical for economic growth and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The minister is expected to spotlight India’s accelerated transition towards renewables, noting that the country now generates 50 per cent of its total power capacity from renewable sources, a milestone achieved ahead of global forecasts. This reinforces India’s commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient energy future while ensuring inclusive growth.
He will also share India’s experiences in expanding energy access and affordability, particularly in rural and underserved regions, and highlight the challenges faced by developing nations in navigating climate and energy transitions amid resource constraints.
The ETMM and its precursor, the Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG), will be held in-person at Durban. The meetings are expected to advance the G20 agenda on clean energy, industrial decarbonisation, and inclusive transition pathways, aligning with India’s broader vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’.
Khattar’s participation signals India’s continued leadership in global energy diplomacy, with a focus on balancing sustainability, security, and development priorities.
