ABB India Modernises BPCL’s Vadinar‑Bina Pipeline for Uninterrupted Operations
At 935 km, BPCL’s Vadinar‑Bina Pipeline stands as a cornerstone of India’s energy security, supplying 7.80 MMTPA to the Bina refinery in Madhya Pradesh amid rising demand.
ABB India Ltd, the Indian arm of ABB Group, has successfully delivered a critical energy infrastructure modernisation initiative by upgrading the automation and monitoring systems for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd’s (BPCL) Vadinar‑Bina Pipeline (VBPL).
This 935 km cross‑country oil pipeline of India’s second‑largest oil marketing company is vital for supporting the country’s energy security at a time of increasing demand, as it supplies 7.80 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to the Bina refinery in Madhya Pradesh.
The project scope included a complete ABB Ability Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system modernisation for the pipeline, the replacement of 35 remote terminal units (RTU) across pumping, pigging and sectionalising valve stations, the installation of new SCADA servers at Vadinar and Bina, and strengthening security and cyber resilience through network protection, system hardening and centralised monitoring.
“The project strengthened our cybersecurity and system resilience, greatly enhancing the reliability of the entire pipeline infrastructure. With failover capability and disaster recovery servers implemented at both Vadinar and Bina, we now have robust support to maintain uninterrupted operations even in challenging conditions,” said Rajshekhar S, Head of Pipelines, Vadinar Bina Pipeline, BPCL.
“ABB executed the modernisation of the pipeline without any operational disruption, ensuring continuous flow and uninterrupted refinery operations throughout the project. This achievement underscores our commitment to delivering future‑ready, resilient technology for India’s most critical energy infrastructure,” added G Balaji, Senior Vice President, ABB India’s Energy Industries division.
In the past, ABB has collaborated with BPCL on several critical projects, including providing automation solutions across approximately 66 per cent of its pipeline infrastructure.
