In order to enable better management of air traffic, AirÂports Authority of India (AAI) will install satellite-based navigaÂtion system in all airports in the country by June 2013. The project would make the country the fourth in the world to have a satellite-based navigation sysÂtem after the US, Japan and European Consortium.
GPS-aided Geo Augmented Navigation system (GAGAN), a satellite-based facility would enhance safety and efficiency of aircraft operations. GAGAN, a joint venture between AAI and Indian Space Research OrgaÂnisation (ISRO), would imÂprove air traffic manaÂgeÂment through timely inforÂmation on aircraft movement, integration of Met data and aeronautical information. By virtue of this system, human intervention will be minimised or eliminated for navigational leading both at ATC room and aircraft cockpit.
