Through this MoU, Air India and IndianOil will collaborate to ensure a reliable, transparent SAF supply chain for international flights, reinforcing India’s leadership in sustainable aviation and energy transition.
Air India and Indian Oil Corp. Ltd (IndianOil) have signed an MoU to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), marking a significant milestone in India’s push for low-carbon aviation. The agreement supports national flag carrier, Air India’s, strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, in line with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) targets and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
The MoU was signed by Shailesh Dhar, Executive Director (Aviation), IndianOil, and P Balaji, Group Head for Governance, Risk and Compliance and Corporate Affairs, Air India, in the presence of IndianOil Chairman AS Sahney and Air India CEO Campbell Wilson.
IndianOil recently became the first Indian company to receive ISCC CORSIA certification for SAF production at its Panipat Refinery, validating its capability to produce fuel that meets stringent international sustainability and lifecycle carbon emission standards.
“Partnering with India’s flagship carrier, we are aligning national growth with global climate goals and setting a benchmark for the industry,” said Sahney.
Campbell Wilson added, “Air India is committed to supporting the government of India’s sustainable development goals in aviation and furthering its own net-zero ambitions.”
Air India’s fleet renewal plan, which includes 570 new aircraft, will enable the airline to operate one of the lowest carbon-emitting fleets globally. The carrier is also expanding non-stop city-pair routes to reduce emissions and has adopted advanced flight planning systems, single-engine taxiing, autonomous electric towing, and frequent engine washes to optimise fuel use.
India aims to achieve 5 per cent SAF blending by 2030. Through this MoU, Air India and IndianOil will collaborate to ensure a reliable, transparent SAF supply chain for international flights, reinforcing India’s leadership in sustainable aviation and energy transition.
