Some reports criticised the Chennai Municipal Corporation and the state government for making wrong choice of roads for repair projects.
Residents complain that the civic body chose good roads for repair projects while neglecting poor quality roads for such projects. For example, the civic body chose Gandhi Nagar that already has good roads and pavements.
It may be recalled that the state government chose roads in Gandhi Nagar, in Adyar, a posh south Chennai locality, for providing better physical infrastructure like granite-topped pavements.
This is not the first time the corporation has chosen good roads for improvement. A few roads in Ashok Nagar, chosen for a revamp worth 10 crore each, are examples, reports indicate.
It is not clear if the funds could be diverted to older corporation zones. Also the choice of Gandhi Nagar, when parts of Thiruvanmiyur, Kasturibai Nagar and Indira Nagar badly need new roads, is debatable.
Choosing Adyar as a zone itself for the project is debatable when areas like Vyasarpadi, Otteri and Triplicane lack good roads and storm water drains.
Corporation engineers in Adyar refused to divulge the list of roads marked for the project and the funds allocated. They claimed that good roads were not being re-laid.
