In Bhubaneswar, the structural design of the proposed foot overbridges (FOB) has been sent to National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela for its examination. Since Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) does not have the expertise to examine the efficacy of such structure to be made of steel, it has roped in NIT for technical assistance.

The BMC will construct three FOBs near Jayadev Vihar, Master Canteen and Rupali Square here in public-private-partnership (PPP) mode. BMC’s city engineer TB K Shroff said that since BMC is going to build FOBs for the first time, BMC want it to be structurally safe. NIT experts would verify the design and suggest necessary modifications, if required, he added.

Shroff said that the private agency, which has been awarded the contract of executing the project, has deposited the consultancy fee with the NIT. The NIT experts are likely to submit their views on Friday.Though the Rs 8-crore project was announced in 2011, it is moving at a snail’s pace. The BMC had set August, 2012, deadline for completion of the project.

While the government had laid the foundation stone of the proposed FOBs on the occasion of Local Self Government Day on August 31, 2011, and announced to make it operational by August 30, 2012, the promise fell by the wayside.
