Cargo volume handled by Paradip Port Trust (PPT) rose 4.24 per cent to 56.55 million tonne (mn t) during 2012-13 compared to 54.55 mn t in the earlier year.
The port raised its cargo handling capacity to 102 mn t in 2012-13 from 80 mn t last year following commissioning of the single point mooring for handling 320,000 tonne capacity vessels.
The port raised capacity also by conducting dredging activity at various berths to 14 metre to handle fully loaded Panamax size vessels.
The port ranks 5th among all the major ports of India in terms of cargo handled. Of the 56.55 mn t cargo handled, 17.44 mn t comprise of export cargo and 39.11 mn t of import cargo.
The port handled 30 per cent more thermal coal in 2012-13 at 21.39 million tonne. The port also witnessed 66.46 per cent rise in container handling this year, said a release from the port trust.
