During Apr-June 2013, New Mangalore Port handled a total of 9.66 million tonne of cargo and this is 12.2 percent higher than 8.61 million tonne handled during the year-ago period.
The growth in the cargo volume is led by crude oil and coal, media reports suggest.
The port traditionally handles crude oil and petroleum products of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL). Also, it handles a considerable amount of coal cargo.
During the quarter, the port handled 3.51 mn t (3 mn t) of imported crude oil for MRPL. The export of petroleum products from the refinery, through New Mangalore Port, increased from 1.43 mn t in the first quarter of 2012-13 to 1.81 mn t during the first three months of 2013-14.
During the period under consideration, the port handled 60 percent more of coal cargo. The port handled 2.66 mn t (1.66 mn t) of coal cargo during the period.
Of this, the share of Udupi Power Corporation (UPCL) stood at 1.1 mn t (0.67 mn t). This company operates a 1,200 mw coal-based thermal power station in the neighbouring Udupi district.
