From the air cargo complex at Mangalore airport, air cargo operations will begin on May 1, JT Radhakrishna, Director of Mangalore International Airport has said. The air cargo complex at the airport was inaugurated by the Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh on March 18.
Addressing the members of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mangalore on April 23 Radhakrishna said that initially scheduled flights will carry air cargo in passenger aircraft, which is technically called as belly cargo. Depending on the potential for air cargo, special cargo flights will be introduced in future, he said.
While inaugurating the air cargo terminal in Mangalore, Ajit Singh had stated that the terminal has 1,400 sq metre of space for international cargo and 1,100 sq metre for domestic cargo. The facility has a holding capacity of 50,00 tonne for international import cargo, 13,000 tonne for export cargo, 18,000 tonne for domestic inbound cargo and 21,000 tonne for domestic outbound cargo.
