In India’s major ports the cargo throughput grew 2.59 per cent to 277 million tonne (mt) in first half of the present financial thanks to the growth at Ennore, Paradip and New Mangalore, said the agency Icra on December 11. Coal imports, petroleum oil and lubricants (POL), and fertilisers drove the volume growth, while iron ore and container volume dragged the overall growth, Icra said.
The growth in throughput at the major ports on a consolidated basis was driven by Ennore, Paradip and New Mangalore ports, which posted 59 per cent, 33 per cent and 16 per cent year on year growth respectively.
Iron ore throughput declined 34 per cent on a y-o-y basis courtesy the bans on mining, while JNPT located off Mumbai and Chennai which register the maximum traffic on the container front, registered a slide of 5 per cent and 6 per cent in volumes, respectively, it said.
