During Apr-Jun 2013 quarter, cargo volume at Paradip Port Trust (PPT) rose 45 per cent to 17 million tonne (mn t) from 11.74 mn t in the year-ago period.
In an official statement, the only major port in Odisha said the cargo volume during the quarter exceeded the target set for the period by 5.79 per cent.
Among all major ports in the country, the port is ranked at second position in terms of both volume and percentage growth in traffic. In June alone, the throughput was 5.45 mn t (3.63 mn t), an increase of over 50 per cent.
The port handled 177 per cent more of iron ore export cargo at 1.03 mn t during the quarter compared to 0.37 mn t in the year-ago period.
Thermal coal (coastal shipment) rose nearly 58 per cent at 6.84 mn t (4.34 mn t), fertiliser raw materials (import) rose 45.12 per cent to 0.83 mn t (0.57 mn t), coking coal (import) rose 27 per cent at 1.59 mn t (1.25 mn t) and POL (import) rose 24.5 per cent at 4.8 mn t (3.76 mn t).
The average turnaround time was up 11 per cent, average berth-day output 4 per cent and rail-borne traffic 53 per cent.
The port handled a record quantity of 176,924 tonne of imported high-speed diesel and this is more than the previous record of 172,365 tonne.
