In the first half of current financial year,
cargo handled at IndiaÂ’s 12 major ports rose by 2.3 per cent, due to a whopping 44 per cent jump in power-grade coal imports. The government-owned ports handled 277 million tonne (mt) of cargo against 270 mt during the same period last fiscal.

In VO Chidambaranar Port (VOC) in Tuticorin, coal imports surged at with a cargo volume of 106,17,791 million tonne (mt) handled in 2012-13. With this, the volume the port handled has surpassed the past record of 92,76,356 mt in the earlier year.
Goa mining policy to promote tourism
The Goa government through its mineral policy 2013, envisages promotion of tourism in the mining belt of the state and create employment opportunities for people of the particular area. The policy states that mining related to tourism would be promoted to create awareness, educate the masses and provide employment opportunities to local people.
Imported coal stocks at major ports up by 2%
Imported coal stocks at 16 major ports in India stood at 10.2 million tonne (mt) on September 28, Intercocean Group data showed. Interocean Group is a a Delhi-based shipbroker. The imported coal stocks at the major ports is up by 2 per cent from a week earlier.

Union Minister for Mines Dinsha Patel hoped that the legal and environmental issues in Goa's iron ore mining will be resolved by October-end or November first week.
Chennai Port: 9 parties keen to turn coal berths into containers
Nine parties have expressed their interest to convert Chennai Port's existing three coal berths at Jawahar Dock (East) into a container terminal. Five parties of the nine have expressed keen interest to develop container terminal and four parties for modernising the terminal. The pre-bid meeting along with site inspection was held recently to elicit response from the prospective clients, say media reports.
