In the last few months, the supply of coal to power sector has been rising, claims Coal India (CIL). It says the perceÂntage materialisation of coal supply to the power stations against the commitment as per fuel supply agreements or memorandum of understandings in the months of October, November and December (up to 20) have been 88 percent, 96 percent and 103 percent, respectively.

Tata Power to own Tata BP Solar
Tata Power signed an agreement to acquire 51 percent stake of BP Alternative Energy Holdings, in its solar joint venture, Tata BP Solar. After the purchase, Tata Power will own the entire company. The move comes in the wake of BP's recent decision to exit its solar busiÂness. Tata BP Solar was forÂmed in 1989 to manufacture phoÂÂtoÂvoltaic cells and modules.

Power Min seeks scrapping of import duty on coal
In order to tackle the coal price surge, the Power Ministry is pushing for abolition of Customs duty on imported coal. The Ministry is trying to garner the support of the Planning Commission on the issue, which is expected to be countered by the Finance Ministry in light of the revenue implications.

Voith inks deal with L&T
Voith Hydro has signed a contract with L&T Hydro Power for the Singoli Bhatwari Hydro-Electric Project.This includes the supply of the entire equipment of the power units and electrical and mechanical auxiliaries. L&T Uttaranchal Hydro Power is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) created to implement the 3 x 33 MW Singoli Bhatwari hydro-electric project.

GKEL gets Mega Power status
GMR Kamalanga Energy (GKEL) has executed an agreement for supply of 260 MW to Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB) under Case I bidding. With this agreement, GKEL has tied up 85 percent of its power sale under tariff policy. This makes GKEL eligible to avail Mega Power status under the new policy.

Solar Cities to be Developed
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy proposes to develop 60 cities as solar cities. So far,based on proposals received by the government from various sates, in-principle approval has been given to 48 cities to be developed as solar cities in the country. Out of these, 37 cities have been given the green light by the government.
