Freight traffic of Eastern Railway increased by 4.4%

Eastern Railway (ER) posted 4.4 per cent growth in freight traffic in 2012-13 at 60.30 million tonne (mt) over 57.75 mt in 2011-12, according. This was the highest ever loading since the bifurcation of ER 10 years ago. Coal accounted for the largest share, nearly 70 per cent, at 41.92 mt (38.25 mt).

Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on April 12 stated that the first railway station in the state at Mendipathar in the North Garo Hills would be inaugurated soon. Kochi’s old railway station to be revived at Rs 100 cr

In Kerala's Kochi, the old railway station or the Ernakulam Railway Goods Station behind the Kerala High Court is to be revived at Rs 100 crore. The project proposal has been submitted to the Southern Railway. Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Railway Manager Rajesh Agarwal announced this in Kochi on April 8 and said the existing lines and the station building (abandoned a few decades ago) could be renovated using the initial outlay of Rs 100 crore.

Ernakulam-Kayamkulam line doubling to be over by 2014

The rail line doubling work of Ernakulam-Kayamkulam line through Kottayam and Alappuzha will be over by 2014-15. Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has said that the work is going on as per the revised schedule and this was the first time that the Railways is providing ‘committed funds’ for track doubling in the busy corridor.
