India’s financial capital is set to host a world‑class marina that aims to stand alongside leading global destinations such as Florida, Singapore and Dubai. The Union Government has approved the Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina project in Mumbai Harbour at an estimated cost of ₹8.87 billion, marking a major push for coastal shipping, maritime tourism and waterfront‑led urban development.
Cleared by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the project aligns with the government’s broader vision of creating global‑standard tourism assets and strengthening India’s maritime economy. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the approval as a significant milestone. “The project will create world-class infrastructure, open the waterfront for public use, encourage private investment and generate new employment opportunities. It will help position Mumbai as a global maritime tourism hub while advancing India’s broader blue economy goals.”
The development is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs across marina operations, cruise services, hospitality and allied sectors.
The project will be executed through a hybrid development model. The Mumbai Port Authority will invest ₹4.70 billion to construct the core marine infrastructure on an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis, while a private operator will develop the onshore facilities with an investment of ₹4.17 billion. The ministry has approved the port authority’s investment, and tenders have already been floated, with bids scheduled to close on December 29.
Spread across nearly 12 hectares of water area, the marina will be capable of berthing 424 yachts of up to 30 metres in length. The marine infrastructure will include an approach trestle, piled breakwater, service platforms, pontoons and gangways designed to support safe and efficient yacht operations. The private operator will develop a marina terminal building, the Namo Bharat International Sailing School, a maritime tourism development centre, hotel and clubhouse facilities, a skill development centre and yacht stacking and repair infrastructure.
The project is closely aligned with national maritime frameworks, including Maritime India Vision 2030, Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, the Sagarmala Programme, the Cruise Bharat Mission and the Port Master Plan 2047 of the Mumbai Port Authority. Once completed, the Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina is expected to become a signature waterfront destination that strengthens coastal logistics while opening new avenues for tourism, investment and employment.
