The Union Government has favoured rolling out restructuring package for power distribution companies (discoms). This is inevitable given that majority of discoms across India are facing financial crunch of varying degrees, Union Minister for Power Veerappa Moily said. He added that a Cabinet note is under circulation, which will help the Ministry to take the matter early to the Cabinet and get clearance for the same.
The minister said all discoms should start functioning viably. There are states where power is produced, but there are no takers, because the states cannot pay and in some case bills are pending for varying periods. In such a scenario, it does not become viable to produce power, Moily said, adding that stringent conditions will be imposed on the states as part of the plan to ensure viability.
