The Centre, in an effort to assuage the Seemandhra people, following its decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh to create Telangana, is pushing for big-ticket projects and other sops keeping in view that Vijayawada may be proposed as the capital of the Seemandhra region.
After the Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde headed group of ministers (GoM) sought inputs from Central ministries, among others, the proposals, including various sops, have been submitted for the consideration of the GoM.
The Centre’s proposals are setting up an international airport at Vijayawada, an industrial town that falls in Seemandhra region; and seven IITs, four Central universities, four IIMs and three NITs in Seemandhra region, of which one each may be located in Vijayawada. Other proposals include upgradation of Kadappa airport with night-landing facilities and connecting it to Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru.
