Unconfirmed reports indicate that the central government received a request from the Arunachal Pradesh governor Lt-Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma to expedite civil aviation projects in the state and restore Lilabari Airport as early as possible.
In New Delhi, Sharma held a meeting with union civil aviation Minister Ajit Singh to discuss aviation projects in the state.
During the meeting, the governor asked the minister
to introduce more helicopter services in the land-locked state to ease out the communication bottleneck.
He discussed with the minister the overall civil aviation scenario and related projects that are coming up in different parts of the state.
Sharma said that due to its vastness and difficult geographical terrain, Arunachal was largely dependent on air services.
He requested that two helicopters be given to the state government – one for regular passenger service and the other for ration sorties. The governor said that progress of NEC-funded Tezu Airport is slow.
The governor wants the centre to direct Airport Authority of India (AAI) to expedite the work as the project would enhance connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh.
The governor also called for expediting projects like advance landing grounds (ALGs) and Greenfield Airport, sources added.
