Union government raised the cap on subsidised cooking gas cylinder per household per year to nine from the previously fixed six. The new cap would be applicable from the financial year beginning April 1, 2013.

Between September 2012 and March 2013, household will get a quota of five subsidised cylinders, Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily told reporters after the meeting on Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA).

The Election Commission has granted no objection to government’s proposal for raising cap on LPG gas quota.

The government, meanwhile, kept the price of LPG and kerosene unchanged. Moily ruled out any revision in fuel prices as of now. However, he said that OMCs have been authorised to make diesel price corrections from time to time. This in effect translates into a partial deregulation of diesel prices.

While the cost of subsidised LPG is Rs 410.50 per 14.2-kg cylinder, the same for unsubsidised LPG is Rs 895.50 per bottle, which is close to the market price.

If a household consumes more cylinders than the fixed cap, it would have to pay the unsubsidised price for the excess cylinders over and above the cap.

The minister said the government was committed to ensure smooth supply of cooking gas to consumers. To ensure this, the government will launch a system of rating gas dealers on the basis of time taken to deliver cylinders, and allowing customers to switch dealers.
