Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), led by GMR AERO, has announced that the upgraded Terminal 2 (T2) at Indira Gandhi International Airport will become operational from October 26, coinciding with the start of the winter schedule. The move marks a significant milestone in India’s airport modernisation drive, with T2 now equipped to handle growing passenger volumes through a suite of smart technologies and design enhancements.

Built four decades ago by the Airports Authority of India, Terminal 2 was temporarily closed in April 2025 to facilitate a comprehensive upgrade, following the full commissioning of the new Terminal 1. The revamped T2 is now positioned as a future-ready facility, designed to deliver a seamless and intuitive travel experience.

Speaking on the development, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL, said, “Terminal 2 is not just a facility upgrade—it’s a complete reimagination of the passenger journey. With innovative technologies like the Self Baggage Drop and autonomous docking aerobridges, we are empowering travellers, optimising efficiency, and preparing IGI Airport for the future of aviation.”

From the intervening night of October 25-26, approximately 120 daily domestic flights operated by Air India and IndiGo will shift operations to the upgraded terminal. The transition is expected to streamline airside operations and enhance passenger comfort across key domestic routes.

Smart Infrastructure

Among the standout features is the Self Baggage Drop (SBD) facility, which allows passengers to check in their luggage independently, reducing wait times and eliminating queues. Travellers can simply scan their boarding pass, tag their bags, and drop them off in minutes, marking a shift toward contactless and efficient airport journeys.

The terminal also introduces India’s first autonomous docking technology across six newly procured passenger boarding bridges (PBBs) from South Korea. These aerobridges enable quicker aircraft turnaround and smarter gate operations. Designed with elevated ramps for wheelchair access, optimally adjusted cabins, and side-covering cushions for safety and aesthetics, the PBBs reflect a blend of engineering precision and passenger-centric design.

Elevated Design

Architecturally, Terminal 2 features modern ceilings and skylight installations that create a bright, open, and inviting atmosphere. Advanced flooring solutions enhance durability and comfort, while improved road connectivity ensures smoother access to and from the terminal.

Mechanical and electrical upgrades include renovated HVAC systems for optimal air quality, advanced fire safety installations, and expanded electrical infrastructure to support uninterrupted operations. A new high-resolution flight information display system (FIDS) offers real-time updates with greater accuracy, complemented by intuitive signage designed for accessibility, especially for Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM).

The airside and apron areas—having served for over 40 years—have undergone major refurbishments to support efficient aircraft movement and accommodate rising traffic volumes. These upgrades align with DIAL’s broader vision to transform IGI Airport into a next-generation aviation hub.
