Domestic Flyers Drive Digital Airport Revolution with Record Self-Check-In and DigiYatra Uptake: CSMIA

Over 3.86 million passengers printed their boarding passes at Mumbai airport’s self-check-in kiosks between April 2024 and August 2025, opting for speed, autonomy, and a queue-free experience that’s reshaping airport travel.

In a sign of a market rapidly embracing time-saving air travel, domestic passengers are outpacing their international counterparts in adopting digitally enabled transit experiences, according to data from India’s second busiest airport.

At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai, passenger engagement with biometric verification, self-service baggage drops, and common-use self-check-in kiosks has grown significantly over the past 16 months.

CSMIA’s self-check-in kiosks allow passengers to check in, print boarding passes, generate baggage tags, and modify seat preferences, without queuing at counters. Between April 2024 and August 2025, over 3.86 million passengers used these kiosks to print boarding passes.

Domestic carriers led the shift, with IndiGo (2.58 million), Air India (1.09 million), and Air India Express (53,301) recording the highest usage. Among international airlines, Air France (90,902), Emirates (18,356), and Lufthansa (18,017) saw growing engagement.

In August 2025 alone, 264,414 boarding passes were printed via kiosks, a 41.84 per cent increase over April 2024 (186,419 passes).

The airport’s 32 self-baggage drop (SBD) units also saw rising adoption. Between April 2024 and August 2025, approximately 715,000 bags were processed through SBD machines, which enable check-in within 17 to 20 seconds on average.

Domestic carriers accounted for around 600,000 bags checked in via SBD units, while international airlines, including KLM, Air France, Emirates, Lufthansa, and Swiss, collectively processed over 70,000 bags.

This shift is accelerating CSMIA’s transition from traditional counters to hybrid-SBD models. International monthly adoption rose from 4.15 per cent in April 2024 to 13.9 per cent by August 2025. Domestic adoption also increased from 5.26 per cent to 6.28 per cent over the same period.

DigiYatra Adoption Surge

CSMIA’s 46 DigiYatra-enabled e-gates and 40 face pods across both terminals support biometric verification, enabling a paperless, faster journey through terminal entry, security, and boarding. Passengers typically pass through each checkpoint in 2-3 seconds.

Between April 2024 and August 2025, over 6.3 million passengers used DigiYatra, with monthly adoption rising from 12 per cent to 32 per cent.

These digital shifts are supported by the airport’s modernised Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) and aviio, a mobile-first, AI-powered platform by Adani Airports that enables predictive analytics and operational efficiency. The new-gen AOCC integrates advanced digital systems to enhance coordination among airport stakeholders.

Enhanced visuals, real-time data, and advanced communication tools empower the CSMIA team to manage both routine operations and emergencies with unprecedented agility.
