Recently, Durgapur Steel Plant, which is part of Steel Authority of India (SAIL), commissioned a coke oven battery (No 2) at its unit.
The company completed rebuilding of the 4.45-metre tall battery with 78 ovens and advanced pollution control systems after a delay of about two years.
This is part of the Rs 3,000-crore modernisation cum expansion plan for DSP. Two other components of the grand project for DSP – a 0.75 million tonne a year bloom cum round caster unit and a one million tonne a year medium structural mill – are affected by similar delays and still not ready for commissioning.
In all its ongoing plant level projects, SAIL witnessed time and cost over-runs. SAILÂ’s plant management is tight-lipped about cost over-runs for its ongoing projects.
DSPÂ’s three unit project is supposed to increase steel production by 64 per cent. According to SAIL Chairman CS Verma, these facilities at DSP would enable it to produce steel through the continuous casting process and ensure more profitability.
