As more ports are gearing up to expand their capacities, both in volumes and draft depÂths, Ennore Port will also augment its anchorage facility to meet growing trade requiremÂents. India's first corporate port is currently equipped to handle 16 mt of coal per year from its two dedicated coal berths manÂned by TNEB. A third berth is promoted by Chettinad International Coal Terminal, a common user facility that can handle 8 mt per annum.
The main demands are for the soon-to-be-commissioned 1,200 MW North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS) in EnnÂore, and a 1,500 MW thermal power station at Vallur in the vicinity of the port. The port plans to dredge land to the southeast of the existing coal berths to add one or two more berths. Port officials said the project report is being prepared and work will commence after receiving clearances.
