Ennore Port (EPL) allotted 13.5 hectare land for setting up a 2 million tonne per annum multi-purpose cargo terminal. The length of the new cargo berth will be 270 metre with 15 metre draught.

The port plans to set up this terminal through public private partnership (PPP) model and the terminal will have two mobile cranes and a six-fork lift truck to handle clean cargo such as timber, granite, machinery, project cargo, steel, cement and fertilizers.

Cement and fertilizers will be handled only if they are moved through a closed conveyer system.

Soon EPL would float requests for qualifications to attract private parties for this Rs 151 crore terminal project. The selected private developer would set up the terminal in 24 months on a Develop, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer basis. The last date for submission of technical bids is August 28.

On August 12, the port authority would conduct a pre-application conference in which queries relating to the proposed terminal will be answered. EPL plans to award the contract to the successful bidder by December.

The port currently has three terminals to handle automobiles, liquefied natural gas and coal separately. Handling of iron ore has been banned.

Meanwhile, the port plans to set up a Rs 1,270-crore mega container terminal to handle containers alone, for which it is in the process of receiving technical bids from interested parties.
