Essar Oil has begun gas production from its Raniganj coal bed methane block in West Bengal. It is producing 90,000-100,000 million standard cu m per day of gas from below coal seams in the block, and the gas is sold to a fertiliser plant at $ 4.2 per million British thermal units. Essar expects to touch a peak output of over three million standard cu m per day in three years. Production from the block will last 15 years.
