Experts suggest the Karnataka government to set up satellite towns around Bengaluru and provide commuter rail connectivity to these towns in order to de-congest the IT city.
According to experts, it is only the development of suburban towns around Bengaluru and provision of a rail network which can reduce population concentration in the main city.
Therefore, they suggest the state government to reintroduce the satellite town project.
They opine that expansion of the metro rail to suburbs is too expensive. When the government is ready to spend Rs 60,000 crore over the next 10 years to complete the metro, the commuter rail system can be implemented at a cost of Rs 8,000 crore in the next four years, experts argue.
Experts want the government to set up satellite towns in places like Chikkballapur, Malur and sites beyond Whitefield. The government can also develop areas along the Mysore Road and Bangarpet lines where a rail system already exists.
Further experts suggest that the government must reduce the time gap between the notification and actual acquisition of land for township project. Since the acquisition takes a long time, people build on these properties and later bring pressure on the government to change the alignment or the location of the satellite town, experts point out.
