To reduce the burden on Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the Union government has decided to take back several road projects from it and help it focus on border areas. BRO’s prime task is developing and maintaining ‘strategic roads’ in border areas.

The government set up the BRO primarily to service the connectivity needs of the armed forces. For the development of national highways, the government is also considering setting up a new company or wing under the Highways Ministry, which, too, are of strategic importance and can improve connectivity with neighbouring countries.

BRO been struggling to develop roads and highways in its portfolio, many of which have not taken off for several years. Seeing this, the government has decided to take back the BRO’s projects.
