Govt may amend toll policy soon

The Union government is likely to take a decision on the practice of toll collection by road developers in the country. The Highways Ministry has suggested to the Union Cabinet to end the toll collection by road developers once the road project of the particular developer comes to an end. The idea is to ensure that developers expedite projects’ completion rather than delay construction and keep on collecting toll.

The Union Highways Ministry will send its proposal to the Cabinet soon. The proposal includes the suggestion that in highway projects involving expansion from four-lane to six-lane, developers can collect only 75 per cent of the toll ‘as at present’ during the construction period. The yearly escalation applied on toll rates would also not be allowed.

Only after the construction is complete can developers start collecting the full toll amount. At present, in four-lane to six-lane expansion projects, developers can start collecting toll from the first day.
