Govt may pace up clearances to Rs 49K cr power plants

The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh headed Cabinet Committee on Investments is expected to speed up Rs 49,000 crore worth power plants of companies like Reliance Power and Essar Power, which have been stuck for want of environment and forest clearances at various levels. The panel will consider diversion of forest land for a coal block attached to Rs 20,852 crore Sasan ultra mega power project.

Reliance Power owns the the 4,000 mw plant. And similar issues related to Essar Power’s Rs 5,700 crore Tori-I power plant in Jharkhand will also be considered, sources in the government said. The CCI will also discuss giving nod for use of imported coal till domestic coal is made available for the Tori project.

In Jharkhand, Jaiprakash Power Ventures’ Rs 8,100 crore Nigire project will be taken up for diversion of forest land for railway sliding. Other power projects to be considered are Rs 7,400 crore power project of JAS Infra and Power and Athena Power’s Rs 6,200 crore plant in Chhattisgarh.
