It is said that the Union Shipping Ministry is not in favour of allowing another maritime university in Kerala. With this, KeralaÂ’s hopes to have a maritime university in the State may not materialise soon. Why because, the first one in Tamil Nadu is yet to get over its teething troubles.

Setting up of five maritime universities in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Vishakhapatnam and Kochi were recommended by the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Tourism with clearly-demarcated geographical jurisdiction. The committee felt that one maritime university is not enough to serve the purpose of maritime studies and research.

To set up a new maritime university, the Kerala Government had even offered 60 acres of land close to NH 47 in Kochi. More than 50 per cent of the students in the two maritime universities (one private deemed university) in Tamil Nadu are from Kerala.
