Kerala government’s plan to construct Azheekode Munambam Bridge and a coastal corridor from Vallarpadam to Kozhikode via Ponnani may benefit International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam, reports suggest.
The present congestion on National Highway (NH) 17 will be reduced once this corridor becomes a reality. The proposed bridge and the corridor may enable smooth movement of cargo to and from the ICTT.
The finance minister of the state said that the construction of the planned bridge will begin soon at a cost of Rs 150 crore. The corridor will be developed at an estimated charge of Rs 117 crore.
Once the construction of Azheekode Munambam Bridge is completed, the proposed corridor can be fully utilised, reports suggest.
The minister also said that steps will be taken to complete the construction of a coastal road from Fort Kochi to Alappuzha via Chellanam. An amount of Rs 5 crore has been allotted in this regard.
Presently traders from North Kerala are left with no option other than NH 17 which passes through inland areas. If there is a direct road touching the coastal small towns, it will definitely support cargo movement to and from the ICTT.
