The Union government has been urged to increase shipping around coastal area and enable hassle-free multi-modal transport. The requisition has been made by industry body Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) and Yes Bank.
The study, forecasting a negative outlook for India’s shipping industry in 2013-15, has asked the government to declare a coastal shipping policy to increase coastal shipping and encourage hassle-free multi-modal transport.
Expanding Indian tonnage through necessary policy interventions to raise the country’s share in global ship building to 5 per cent from the present level of 1 per cent is also one of the study’s suggestions.
The study found that port congestion, exorbitant terminal charges, inadequate infrastructure and the inability of the Indian ports to meet rising demand in container traffic are some of the hurdles plaguing the country’s shipping industry.
