Gujarat minister of Energy and Petrochemicals Saurabh Patel informed that the state government plans to provide Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections in cities of Bhavnagar, Amreli, Junagadh, Jamnagar, Kutch (East) and Kutch (West).

However, the central government has been delaying approval for the project in past two years, the minister said. The bidding process for providing PNG connections in these cities was held in February 2011.

The minister informed the state assembly that nearly one lakh households in Navsari, Surat, Valsad, Rajkot and Surendranagar would get connections for the PNG for cooking purpose.

Patel alleged that lack of nod from the central government has put on hold, the plans to provide PNG in Kutch and Saurashtra.

The minister also claimed that the supply of gas through pipelines has resulted in subsidy savings worth Rs 660 crore to the central government, which otherwise, is provided to the consumers of LPG.

The state will also add the capacity to transport 11.5 million metric tonne of gas in the state. Dahej and Hazira, the LNG terminals in the state have a combined capacity of 14.6 million metric tonne.
