Kurukshetra will be soon getting its first bio-CNG plant based on agri-waste. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) and the Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA). A compressed biogas plant (CBP) will be built by IOCL that would offer a green solution to the disposal of crop residue and other organic matter. The foundation stone for the plant will be laid in the coming month. Besides, IOCL has also proposed several such CBPs in five years. About 1,000 tonne per day of compressed biogas is the proposed capacity of the multi-facilities. IOCL has an underground network crossing through Kurukshetra and it is connected to refineries in north India. On similar terms, the proposed CBPs will be connected. The aim is to promote agriculture waste-based biomass or waste-to-compressed-biogas (bio-CNG) plants in order to curb stubble-burning and scientific disposal of agriculture waste. The initiative will not only increase farmersÂ’ income by ways of selling crop residue but will also create employment opportunities in villages.
