Hooghly Dock & Port Engineers (HDPEL), situated at Kolkata, is one of the oldest shipyards in India, which is in the business of ship building and shop repairs. HDPEL owns two manufacturing units at Howrah, adjacent to Kolkata, which are fully functional with infrastructure to build various types of vessels, upto the size of 2,500 deadweight tonne (DWT).

The central government nationalized the company in mid 1980s as both the units of the company were suffering heavy losses for want of fresh investment and modernization. The nationalisation was intended to utilize the available infrastructure through necessary investment for modernization and increase the capacity for shipbuilding and ship repairing in the country.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the state-run company wants to form a joint venture with another company, which has experience in the development or construction of ship building or port and harbour facilities, for revitalising its business.
