Heinzmann to retrofit IR’s diesel locomotives

Heinzmann GmbH & Co has received a major order from Indian Rialways (IR) to retrofit an initial 40 diesel locomotives to run on natural gas. This minimises the diesel injection, which is only needed to ignite the gas-air mixture. The retrofit is part of IR’s environmental protection programme for reducing emissions. The natural gas drive promises above all reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and fine dust compared to the diesel drive. The first locomotive is currently being retrofitted. After trials on the test rig, the locomotive is sent back on the rails for a test run. Following this, the other locomotives will be retrofitted step by step.
