CS Gundewar, Controller General, Indian Bureau of Mines stressed on the need for more scientific and environment conscious mining by using eco-friendly technologies.
He said this while delivering a lecture at the National technology Day programme organsied by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri).
He pointed out that at present India produces 65 million tonne steel, but as per the ‘National Steel Policy’ country is expected to raise this production to 180 million tonnes by the year 2020.
But this, he said, would be possible only by exploring new mines. Though India has large resources of iron ores with estimated capacity of 28.52 billion tonne, magnetite reserves could not be exploited due to the presence of these ores in the ‘eco-fragile’ zones mainly in Western Ghats. Iron ore is found as hematite and magnate in India in the ratio of 63:37.
He pointed out that consumption of iron ore (hematite) in iron and steel manufacture in the country is only around 45-50 percent of the domestic production, whereas remaining iron ore is exported at present owing to inadequacy of suitable agglomeration facilities (pelletisation in particular) in the country.
Earlier, Neeri Director Satish Wate stressed on the need to develop indigenous technologies to solve the local problems. He appraised the gathering about the technological developments of the institute.
