The International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam is said to be losing cargo volume to other ports because of increase in the cost of operation.

The terminal operator in ICTT has reportedly raised the handling charges. The on-availability of examination yard inside ICTT has also raised cost.

These have driven off most of the traders from Kochi, thereby affecting customs revenue to a great extent, reports suggest. The customs witnessed a steep fall in the revenue from July 2011 where it stood at Rs 215.65 crore against Rs 307.52 crore in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In September 2011, the customs earned Rs 104.51 crore against Rs 313.15 crore the previous year. During October, November and December 2011, the figures stood at Rs 104.41 crore; Rs 96.54 crore and Rs 80.31 crore respectively against Rs 260.45 crore; Rs 247.02 crore and Rs 209.72 crore in the previous year.
